How to Beat the Heat! Naturopathic Tips and Tricks

Summer is upon us and so are the rapidly rising temperatures. Here are some quick, easy and natural tips to beat the heat and ground the body to prepare for summer.

  1. Eat cooling foods– think watermelon, cucumber, grapes, okra, aloe juice. All of these foods contain higher amounts of water and are cooling to the tissues because they contain so much moisture. Bonus if you are combining cooling herbs like mint, spearmint or chamomile. Click here for a fun recipe for watermelon juice!
  2. Use a hydrosol spray to cool your face, arms, neck and any other areas of exposed skin while outside. Hydrosols are a byproduct of essential oil production from medicinal plants. They are a combination of the remaining essential oils that have been distilled and mixed with water. They are extremely refreshing, cooling and toning to the tissues. Can be found at Winter Sun, Sprouts or Peak Scents!
  3. Wear cooling clothing– light colored fabrics, sports shirts with SPF built in, or linen clothing are our favorites for beating the heat.
  4. Take a cold shower after working, playing or simply being outdoors- 30 seconds of cold helps to quickly invigorate yet cool the body. Try after hiking, biking, yard work or walking around downtown.
  5. Plenty of water with electrolytes– if you are urinating more than 10x per day, you are probably not holding on to your water to hydrate your tissues and need minerals. We love adding LMNT or Redmond Re-lyte to our daily water. Check in with our physicians if you have high or low blood pressure so we can help you tailor the amount of electrolytes you may need.
  6. IV hydration– sometimes repleting with water is not enough, especially if we have a medical condition that makes us prone to dehydration. We are happy to offer hydration bags as a means of quick replenishment of fluid.

*buyer beware! Most electrolytes have artificial flavors, sugars or additional chemicals, check the label*
