What is Acupuncture?

Reduce pain, increase relaxation, and promote overall well-being with...

Acupuncture

Acupuncture, or the insertion of fine wire-like needles into specific places on the body, is a traditional Chinese medical practice and one of the oldest therapies known to mankind. The history of acupuncture speaks volumes to its therapeutic efficacy. It is gentle and safe and has no toxic side effects. Most patients experience an immediate sense of deep relaxation on the treatment table and fall asleep.

How does acupuncture work?

The fundamental concept behind acupuncture is the idea that there are channels or meridians in the body through which vital energy, called “qi” or “chi,” flows. According to TCM theory, when the flow of qi is disrupted or blocked, it can lead to various health problems. Acupuncture is believed to restore the balance of qi by stimulating specific points along these meridians.

What are the health benefits of acupuncture?

Acupuncture offers a range of health benefits for both the body and mind. Here are some of the commonly recognized benefits:

    1. Stress reduction: Acupuncture is known for its ability to promote relaxation and reduce stress levels. It helps to release endorphins, which are natural mood-enhancing chemicals in the body, leading to a sense of calm and well-being.
    2. Pain relief: Acupuncture can help alleviate muscle tension, reduce pain, and improve joint mobility. It can be beneficial for various conditions, including back pain, neck and shoulder tension, headaches, and chronic conditions like arthritis.
    3. Muscle relaxation: Acupuncture can help relax tight muscles and relieve muscular knots and spasms. This can lead to improved flexibility, reduced muscle soreness, and enhanced range of motion.
    4. Enhanced immune function: Regular acupuncture has been associated with a boost in immune system functioning. It can increase the activity of natural killer cells and improve the lymphatic system’s ability to eliminate waste and toxins from the body.
    5. Improved sleep quality: Acupuncture can promote better sleep by reducing stress and anxiety, relieving muscular tension, and promoting relaxation. It can help regulate sleep patterns and improve overall sleep quality.
    6. Mental well-being: In addition to the physical benefits, acupuncture can have positive effects on mental health. It can help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve mood, and enhance overall feelings of relaxation and well-being.
    7. Rehabilitation and injury recovery: Acupuncture is often used as part of injury rehabilitation programs. It can help reduce pain and inflammation, improve flexibility and range of motion, and aid in the recovery process by promoting circulation and tissue healing.

It’s important to note that while acupuncture can be highly beneficial, it may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with certain medical conditions or injuries. It’s always recommended to consult with a qualified healthcare professional to determine the most appropriate treatment approach for your specific needs.

Which health conditions can benefit from acupuncture?

The conditions that acupuncture can treat are too numerous to list. Some common ailments that respond quickly to acupuncture are headaches, body pain, digestive issues, allergies, emotional stress and fatigue. No matter what condition we are treating patients notice increased energy and a heightened sense of well-being. Let acupuncture be the catalyst for the change that you are seeking.

What happens during an acupuncture session?

During an acupuncture treatment, small needles are applied to specific locations on the body. Acupuncture is traditionally performed on a massage table and is otherwise painless.

Many conditions may be alleviated very rapidly by acupuncture; however, some conditions that have arisen over a course of years will be relieved only with slow, steady progress. As in any form of healing, the patient’s attitude, diet, determination and lifestyle will affect the outcome of a course of treatment. Traditional Chinese medicine is also an educational process in which the patient becomes more aware of his or her own body, thus increasing its ability to maintain health and well-being. Although there are techniques in Traditional Chinese medicine for healing most conditions, there are medical circumstances that can be dealt with more effectively by Western medicine. In such cases, the practitioner will advise you as such and can help you with that process.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes! In the hands of a licensed acupuncturist, your safety is assured. The needles are sterilized and disposable. Acupuncture is a gentle, relaxing treatment that typically doesn’t trigger too strong of a healing response.

NOTE: Dr. Jamie Flanery has went off to start her own clinic in the valley, so we are unable to offer acupuncture at this time. We are actively looking to hire another practitioner to does acupuncture. You are welcome to still give us a call and we'll refer you to someone else in the area!
