Biotherapeutic Drainage
Biotherapeutic drainage remedies are deep acting remedies that work on drainage pathways in the body including lymphatic circulation, detoxification pathways and to open emunctories (organs of elimination such as the GI tract, liver, kidneys, skin, respiratory mucosa). Three types of drainage remedies are used at Aspen Integrative Medical Center:
- UNDA numbers
- Gemmotherapy
- PEKANA drainage kit
Each remedy works on drainage systems within the organs and tissues, but are comprised of slightly different medicines. We have hundreds of lymph nodes all over the body interacting with virtually every organ system. Drainage remedies are extremely popular in Europe and other parts of the world.
Which health conditions respond well to biotherapeutic drainage?
Utilization of biotherapeutic drainage is helpful for many concerns including, but not limited to:
- Complex chronic disease
- Acute conditions
- Heavy metal or toxin exposure (mold, environmental)
- Gastrointestinal conditions
- Cardiovascular conditions
- Skin conditions
- Genitourinary conditions
- Respiratory conditions
- Nervous system dysregulation and mental health disorders
- Trauma and PTSD
What are UNDA numbers?
UNDA numbers: a blend of herbs, homeopathics, and dilutions of metals. The complexity of UNDA numbers allow them to work deeply in the body, on many different organs and systems and for many different conditions. Because many UNDA numbers contain dilutions of metals (dilutions, meaning minuscule amount of the original substance, they are non-toxic) they are able to drive deeply into the body and stimulate cellular function via enzymatic reactions (most of which need metals as cofactors to function properly). UNDA numbers are typically prescribed in combinations of three different remedies to stimulate different organs, detox pathways and specific functions of the body. UNDA numbers are in a liquid form similar to a tincture and are taken in small amounts-DROPS under the tongue, in water or placed on pulse points or bottoms of feet for the elderly or children. Typically UNDA numbers are given for 3-4 weeks, take a week off, then resume the same combination of remedies or a different combination. UNDA numbers can be utilized with herbs, gemmotherapy and medications.
What is gemmotherapy?
Gemmotherapy: herbal remedies made from plants in the bud, root, or shoot stages (early growth) and extracted with a mix of water, alcohol and glycerin in equal parts. Because gemmotherapy utilizes the plant in a very early stage of growth, we are getting different constituents from the plant such as proteins, growth factors, minerals and hormones. This is very different than a traditional herbal medicine harvested in a late or mature stage of growth. Gemmotherapy also works on the drainage pathways of the body, mostly by organ system or by directly stimulating the immune system. Gemmotherapy can be utilized along with herbal medicine, UNDA numbers, PEKANA drainage. Some gemmotherapy remedies should not be utilized in certain conditions or with certain medications, your practitioner will know when to apply these contraindications. Gemmo remedies may be prescribed as a solitary remedy or with other gemmos. They are in a liquid form similar to a tincture and are taken in small amounts-DROPS under the tongue or in water for several months at a time.
What is PEKANA?
PEKANA drainage kit: the PEKANA drainage kit is a set of remedies made from homeopathic and spagyric herbal medicines. Spagyric herbal medicines work very deeply in the body and are created by harvesting a plant, preparing the plant by burning it and using its ash, soaking it in water, or reducing it to a simpler form for high mineral content and energetic activation. Spagyric herbal medicine is based on general principles of alchemy. Many spagyrics also contain metals, similar to UNDA numbers in minor dilutions to stimulate enzymatic reactions in the body. PEKANA drainage focuses on the liver, kidneys, and lymph to stimulate detoxification pathways.
What other therapies pair well with biotherapeutic drainage?
When beginning drainage remedies of any kind it is important to facilitate proper opening of detox pathways by including any of the following practices into the lifestyle:
- A diet rich in antioxidants and fiber
- Dry skin brushing
- Castor oil packs to the abdomen or any area of the body with nodules, growths or swelling
- Epsom salt baths (foot bath or regular bath)
- Infrared sauna or sweating
- Lymphatic massage
- Rebounding
- Walking and light exercise
What is a herx reaction?
When beginning drainage remedies it is normal to experience a herx reaction, or a die-off response when we start mobilizing toxins. This can present as: more pronounced fatigue, headache, joint pain, muscle pain, fever, chills, diarrhea or constipation, abdominal pain, increase in anxiety or depression. Keep in mind these symptoms are transient and are a sign that we are stimulating the body at a deeper level. If these symptoms become uncomfortable you can do a few things to help this process:
- Stop the remedies for a few days
- Drink plenty of water and rest
- Take activated charcoal, chlorella or another binder with 8 oz of water 1-2 hours away from food or medications
- Do something relaxing for the nervous system like take a bath, walk or sit outside, practice breathing
