Galleri Test
Our office is excited to announce that we are now offering a new cancer screening test for the early detection of cancer. The test is called Galleri, and it can detect over 50 types of cancer as early as Stage 1. This is an exciting breakthrough because traditional cancer screens have been limited to only 5 types of cancer. It’s also encouraging because the earlier that cancer is detected, the more likely it can be cured. And as you can imagine, beating cancer starts with knowing that you have it.
How does Galleri detect cancer?
The test uses next-generation sequencing and machine-learning algorithms to analyze methylation patterns of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in the bloodstream, which can carry cancer-specific information. DNA methylation is a process used by cells to regulate gene expression. If a cancer signal is detected, Galleri will pinpoint where in the body the cancer is coming from to help health care providers determine the appropriate next steps for patient treatment.
Who should take the Galleri Test?
The Galleri test is recommended for adults that are over the age of 50, have a family history of cancer, or simply want to take a proactive approach to their health. Only your healthcare provider can determine if Galleri is right for you.
The Galleri test is intended to be used in addition to, and not replace, other cancer screening tests your healthcare provider recommends. The Galleri test does not detect all cancers and not all cancers can be detected in the blood. It also does not measure your genetic risk of developing cancer in the future.
