What is Chronic Disease?

Feel like yourself again with the help of naturopathic medicine

Healing Chronic Disease

Are you struggling with a complex health condition that doctors haven’t been able to diagnose? Have you seen doctor after doctor, only to receive similar treatments and prescriptions that don’t address the root cause? Are you looking for a personalized recovery plan tailored specifically to you?

If you’re searching for answers to these and other challenging health concerns, Aspen Integrative Medical Center may have solutions that can truly change your life.

Whether you’re healing from a new condition or managing a chronic one, our naturopathic physicians take the time to understand you, uncover the underlying causes of your symptoms, and offer the most effective treatment options with minimal side effects.

Located in Flagstaff, we are chronic disease specialists embracing a holistic approach and offering personalized treatment plans designed to get you back on track to optimal health.

What is the difference between an acute and chronic disease?

Acute and chronic diseases are two broad categories used to describe the duration and progression of illnesses.

Acute diseases are characterized by a rapid onset and a relatively short duration. These illnesses develop suddenly and often present with severe or intense symptoms. Examples include the flu, common cold, acute appendicitis, and acute bronchitis. Acute illnesses usually resolve quickly, either through treatment or the body’s natural healing processes.

Chronic diseases, on the other hand, have a long-lasting and often persistent nature. These conditions typically develop slowly and last for three months or more. While you may have heard that chronic diseases can only be managed but not cured, our experience shows that depending on the condition, many chronic diseases can be put into remission or even cured. Examples include allergies, migraines, fibromyalgia, hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, asthma, and arthritis. Our clinicians work to help you manage symptoms, slow disease progression, and improve your quality of life.

It’s important to note that the line between acute and chronic is not always clear-cut. Some conditions start as acute and progress into chronic states if they persist or recur. Additionally, certain chronic diseases, such as autoimmune disorders, may have acute flare-ups or exacerbations. Our physicians carefully assess the duration, symptoms, and progression of each condition to classify it appropriately and develop the best treatment plan.

Why is chronic disease care so important?

Did you know…

  • Six out of ten adults will develop one or more chronic diseases.
  • Autoimmune diseases often take an average of eight years to progress before symptoms become noticeable.

The dramatic rise in chronic disease is the newest epidemic, and we firmly believe naturopathic medicine offers some of the best tools to address it. Our naturopathic physicians are trained to detect these conditions early and halt their progression—helping you enjoy a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Early identification of “silent” diseases before symptoms appear is critical. Using a combination of standard and specialized testing, our physicians may screen for heavy metal toxicity, cardiovascular inflammation, cutting-edge cancer markers, and more—so treatment can begin as soon as possible.

At Aspen Integrative Medical Center, we believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and that everyone deserves to know their health risks.

What are the causes of chronic disease?

The causes of chronic disease can vary depending on the individual and their condition. While genetics sometimes play a role, more often it is epigenetic triggers — external environmental factors such as toxins, infections, and stress — that drive chronic disease.

As naturopathic physicians, we focus on investigating the underlying imbalances that cause “dis-ease” within each person. Some of the most common triggers and contributors we see include:

  • Leaky gut and dysbiosis
  • Immune system dysregulation leading to autoimmune disease
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Dietary and lifestyle factors
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Pollution and toxin burden, including plastics, chemicals, heavy metals, glyphosate, mold mycotoxins, and more
  • Chronic infections such as Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and Lyme disease,
  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
